SomaliaSomalia is facing an ongoing humanitarian crisis. According to a recent UN OCHA report, food security is at a 16-year low, and the economic downturn has also had an impact: vital remittances from the Somali diaspora have dropped by 15%, owing to global unemployment. As a result, many people can no longer afford basic goods. In addition, the country has seen increased instability and violence in recent months.

Following our 2009 Somalia conference, The Humanitarian Forum continues to work with local actors in Somalia. Dr Hany El Banna's  recent trip to Nairobi and Somaliland was to find safe humanitarian space for IDPs (full article here).

Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP)

A CAP is a longer term strategic response to Humanitarian needs in the region. It outlines the key areas of engagement for the humanitarian sector and gives details of both the actors and the actions to be taken. A CAP was created for Somalia early in 2009 and reviewed more recently. The mid-year review can be accessed here.
