The Humanitarian Forum backs UN call for access in Yemen
4 November 2009
The Humanitarian Forum has welcomed a plea for access in Northern Yemen by top UN official John Holmes, following the resumption of fighting in the area in mid-August.
Around 150, 000 people have been driven from their homes by clashes between Al Houthi rebels and Government forces. Mr Holmes urged all those involved in the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law, asking that they 'allow us to reach those who need assistance, rapidly and without hindrance, and to enable civilians to leave insecure areas'.
The Humanitarian Forum welcomes the plea as the humanitarian situation worsens. Although some local partners and NGOs are managing to get through, there are still vast numbers of Internally Displaced People who continue to be beyond the reach of aid, and many who remain trapped in conflict zones.
