The Humanitarian Forum recently took part in a workshop on Institutional Funding and Partnerships for Muslim-led Non Governmental Organisations in the UK. Organised by the Muslim Charities Forum (MCF), the aim of the workshop was firstly to identify opportunities to build stronger relationships between institutional donors and Muslim-led NGOs, and secondly, to promote partnerships both between Muslim-led NGOs and between them and other types of organisations.

The event was highly successful and very well attended, with participants from, both Muslim and non-Muslim organisations,  including the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), Bond, Muslim Hands, Euclid Network, Islamic Relief, DFID, CAFOD, and Oxfam GB.

The event was introduced by Syed Lakthe Hassanain, Chairman of Muslim Hands and Secretary of MCF, after which several speakers from high-profile organisations led the discussions and gave presentations.

Brendan Gromley, Chief Executive of the DEC, talked about how to survive in the competitive the UK charitable sector. He stressed that in order to secure funding organisations needed not only to identify their unique selling points, but also show how the organisation fits into civil society.

Ben Rattenbury, Programme Manager for the Euclid Network, gave an introduction to European Funding, by explaining where to look for and how to apply for funding opportunities. He stressed the need to build strong partnerships and consortia to maximise their chances of success.

In the afternoon, the UK Government Department for International Development (DFID) gave an overview of the latest White Paper, Eliminating World Poverty: Building our Common Future, which details a new approach to civil society, and includes plans for double funding for CSOs and in particular for faith-based organisations.

The event ended with a Panel Discussion on the experience of successful funding stories through partnerships with Muslim Organisations. All presentations focused on building relationships and provided good examples of how to achieve this.

The Muslim Charities Forum is an umbrella organisation for Muslim-led International NGOs based in the United Kingdom. Its aim is to provide a capacity building resource and advocacy platform for its members.
