Jan O’Sullivan, the Minister of State for Trade and Development for Ireland, announced today that an extra €500,000 will be provided for vital water supplies to areas of Somalia and Northern Kenya that are stricken with drought.
After the return of the Government Technical Team from the Horn of Africa, the detailed briefing of the situation led to the important announcement.
The total level of aid from government funding now lies at €7.7 million.
NGOs will be the recipients of the €550,000, with Oxfam and Christian Aid bearing the brunt of it. The main focus will be trucking clean water to the worst hit of the drought areas, as well as developing new boreholes and providing basic healthcare.
Ireland’s Technical team spent 5 days in the Horn of Africa, where they wrote a detailed report on the requirements that they would need to give. After giving Minister O’Sullivan the report, the scale of the humanitarian crisis and needs of the people led to the influx of money.
