Yemen – the forgotten crisis

The majority of Yemen’s population of 24 million people is living on the poverty line, fighting for survival and unsure where the next meal is going to come from. 34% of the total population do not even have easy access to clean water of any kind, putting millions at risk of many water borne diseases.
According to UN OCHA, there are over 800,000 children suffering from malnutrition. If these children do not get the nutrition needed for growth, they risk spending the rest of their lives with deformities, both physical and mental.
Because of the political turmoil and extreme unrest, Yemenis are being forced to leave their homes and livelihoods behind. The toll of internally displaced people (IDPs) has reached nearly 400,000. Yemen itself is a host country to refugees from the Horn of Africa, especially Somalia, fleeing the famine.
According to the UN, people fled from the little they had with no possessions- no clothes, food or access to clean water and some are even living in caves, in dire conditions.
As the violence and displacement escalate, UN Envoy to Yemen Jamal Bin Omar warns against the “Somalization of the country” and urges all parties to discuss peacefully.
Let us act now and help the needy in Yemen. Humanitarian Forum Yemen is coordinating the distribution of emergency aid in South Yemen. It costs just $85 to keep a family fed for over a month. Give generously this Ramadan! Stop Yemen from becoming a second Somalia!
