Turkey: 7.2 magnitude Earthquake

The quake affected a large area extending from Igdır city in the north to Hakkari city in the south. The impact of the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Bitlis, Ağrı, Iğdır, Erzurum, Muş, Bingöl, Tunceli, Batman, Şırnak, Mardin, Diyarbakır, Siirt and Şanlıurfa. It was followed by a series of 20 powerful aftershocks; the largest had a magnitude of 6.0.

More than 240 people died and 1,100 were injured in quake, many of them in the town of Ercis, where 970 buildings have been damaged, out of which more than 55 apartment buildings have totally collapsed. This was  announced at 11:00 am local time by the “Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency” of Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry. The death toll is expected to rise as hundreds are still trapped.
