UN, OIC and The Humanitarian Forum hold high-level meeting for Syria and Yemen in Cairo
The objective of the meeting was to strengthen the ability of the humanitarian community to respond to humanitarian crises in the region, improve coordination, exchange information and provide insight into the humanitarian coordination system. The meeting gathered 140 representatives from leading international, regional and local organisations from the region and beyond.
Dr. Hani El Banna, the HF President, opened the meeting by highlighting that "the meeting was held to improve humanitarian cooperation and humanitarian delivery for the sake of the needy people, regardless of who they are. There is a fine line between politics and humanitarian action and we cannot afford to cross it".
His speech was followed by a keynote speech made by Adbul Haq Amiri, Head of OCHA's Regional Office for the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia (ROMENA). "This is a very important initiative. The number of regional and local organizations is a demonstration of our shared commitment," he said. "We need to ensure the inclusiveness of all humanitarian actors."
Closing the speech HE . Ambassador Bakhit Atta Al Manane, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General, said the meeting's main objective was to bring this wide group of people together, adding that it could be a model in many countries. "This is a new beginning where we are going to start together, with new partners willing to work together in any part of the world."
