Burundi - Example
Burundi is one of the world's poorest countries, with lack of access to education and proliferation of HIV/AIDS. As a result to approximatively 80% of Burundi's population living in poverty, the country is dependent on foreign aid.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSOCIATION "ADESI"
Definition
By definition ADESI means: Association pour le Developpement et la Solidarite Islamique (Association for Development and Islamic Solidarity)
Background
Formed by the elders of a Qur'anic school (Madrasat Ramadhani Shabani) following the huge socio economic problems engendered by the civil war spanning 12 years in Burundi, the Association for Development and Islamic Solidarity (ADESI) is a non-profit organisation registered under the Government Ordinance n° 530/1053/ of August 10, 2005.
ADESI is governed by a Constitution and is membership driven, the membership being based on local people. The membership elects bearers with tenure of two years, who then form an Executive committee entrusted with the pursuit and realisation of the objectives of ADESI.
The membership through General Assembly ensures that ADESI is run as required by the constitution of ADESI and in accordance with all Burundian Statutory requirements.
Vision
ADESI aims at being one of the major contributors in a sustainable, healthy and productive way for the Burundian people.
Mission
The mission of ADESI is to contribute to the improvement of living conditions of orphan children and other vulnerable people thought sustainable development projects and emergency relief assistance programmes that foster self-reliance.
Objectives
ADESI's main objectives are as follow:
- To contribute to the construction of a worship centre, educational and health facilities
- To provide training for teachers in charge of Islamic Education
- To contribute to the improvement of living conditions of orphan children and other vulnerable people.
- To initiate productive projects as income generating activities of association.
Achievements
Since its inception five years ago, ADESI has undertaken few activities due to lack of funds. Among them we include:
- Construction of 3 classrooms and their furnishings at the Islamic primary school of Buyenzi.
- Distribution of school supplies to orphan and vulnerable children of the urban commune of Buyenzi
- Participation of ADESI to an environmental project of protecting the 400m of Ntahangwa Riverside (a project supervised by Bujumbura Mayorship).
Future
prospects
ADESI intends to expand the current activities to reach larger population in the country and also undertake additional activities based on the protection, promotion and guidance of basic fundamental rights of orphan children and other vulnerable people.
Vocational training to youth for their socio-economic insertion, ADESI's capacity building, Islamic teaching and other educational and welfare projects should be planned and implemented.
In other to achieve the above objectives, ADESI will have to seek support and assistance form well wishers and like-minded organisations to successfully accomplish these goals.
