Capacity building and training

We help to develop the capacity of NGOs so that they can work more effectively, and therefore help their beneficiaries. We think that capacity building is a process that starts from what NGOs already have; it is linked to clear goals/purposes and is not a stand-alone element. Capacity building also comprises various techniques, such as training, coaching and monitoring, learning sources, exchange of knowledge and experiences, manager development, team building, material support and organizational learning.

Various capacity building elements required included not only technical sills but also improvement in practices, ways of working, and capacity to interact and influence others. Various capacity building needs have been suggested by NGOs that participated, including, among others institutional capacity building such as improvements in financial, managerial, administrative and human resources systems, communication within the organizations and with a wide range of INGOs and governments.

Training

We're committed to helping organisations become responsible, accountable and effective partners. We want them to be able to do their best by the people they exist to help, and we want them to reach internationally recognized standards of professionalism. So we support a comprehensive training approach that includes information sharing, peer learning and targeted training.

We support the national forums in assessing training needs in their local humanitarian and development sectors and we organize training workshops to meet those needs. And we link those networks to international and governmental partners who can help them develop and sustain their development. For instance, in Kuwait we've held local forums where representatives from Government and international organizations got to meet, share with and train local organisations. The local organisations were left stronger, more empowered and focused, and they also got to make their stories, issues and questions heard by some internationally influential players.

We've run international workshops on pressing emergency situations. Our latest tackled the humanitarian crisis in Somalia, bringing together a huge variety of different communities to work together, under the guidance of internationally respected, experienced experts in the field of disaster response.

We're also committed to working on the real queries and issues for organisations, as and when they arise. That's why we're building a strong online community, to link organizations throughout the world. We think the best advice comes from the people with hands-on experience, so we're putting organizations in touch with their peers for instant helpful advice and mutual learning.

Our online resource library is another way in which we reach out to our participating members across the globe. Because of the breadth and diversity of our connections, we're in a unique position to bring a huge wealth of information to humanitarian and development organisations worldwide. We provide professional, straightforward, internationally accredited advice, including enabling organisations' access to expert guidelines on such areas as finance, disaster management, and leadership skills. And because we know that some questions can't wait, we make this available online and universally accessible.
