Overview

Civil society in Indonesia has been developing in leaps and bounds in recent years; noticeably in the number of NGOs in existence and the growth of mass media communications. Indonesia is a Muslim aid recipient country, with complex humanitarian problems but huge potential for growth and development.

Humanitarian Forum Indonesia (HFI) was created from a passion to alleviate suffering and create the most effective humanitarian response to the natural disasters which have shaken the country. Since its inception HFI has brought together NGOs which are Muslim, Christian and secular, local and national. Its vision is to see a sustainable civil society realised, and its mission is to create a peaceful civil society structure through capacity building, coordination and partnership.

In the last year HFI has run training Meetings in Padangworkshops for local communities and organisations, and has set up a ground-breaking community-based disaster preparedness toolkit, PASTI, which is funded by UNESCO. The Forum has launched a Humanitarian Report for Indonesia, and contributed to the revision of the UN's international humanitarian standards. HFI has had an integral role in coordinating the relief effort following the Padang Earthquake of September 2009.

Our work in Indonesia has helped to foster trust and co-operation between different groups. We constantly work to keep a good understanding of local NGOs so we can tailor our workshops to meet local needs. This has recently involved building bridges and tackling misunderstandings between communities and INGOs which have been hindering the relief effort.
