Situation Update

The unrest and heavy fighting has lead to an escalation in death toll figures, people injured and further displacement. As many as 100,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to fighting in the south. Hunger and malnutrition, especially among children, are at alarming levels:  nearly one third of children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition in Yemen, according to a UNICEF survey.

The UN has warned that the crisis will hit neraly 4 million people in 2012. With malnutrition rates at above 30 percent and basic food prices skyrocketing almost 50 percent, Yemen's situation is comparable to that in Somalia. People who have remained in their homes face significant challenges due to the massive unrest, including loss of livelihood, power outages, fuel shortages and a food crisis.  The cost of primary food commodities has increased by 46% and this has a tremendously negative effect on the approximately 42% of the 24 million population that lives under $2/day, according to Mercy Corps' 18 December assessment.

Yemen itself is a host country for refugees from the Horn of Africa. The security situation makes it difficult to assess the exact needs on the ground. According to UN OCHA's 7th June assessment, the needs on the ground range from medical supplies, food items and fuel.  Read the assessment and humanitarian snapshot as of 7th June. 30th June snapshot.

Some of the members and partners of The Humanitarian Forum are already on the ground in Yemen, offering much needed relief.
