Update

Since the beginning of 2011, the Middle East, including Yemen, has witnessed a huge wave of political turmoil and unrest. The hardest hit, as is always the case, were the local, low and middle income citizens who were already prey to daily hardships. The civil unrest that quickly escalated caused many people to be displaced, as the rising death toll grasped the nation.

The displacement was born out of necessity. In order to merely survive, they had to leave everything behind them and try to formulate a life away from home. The IDPs and refugees fled from the little they had with no possessions- no clothes, food or access to clean water. For many people, it was either die by gunfire, or die by malnutrition. While the former is instantaneous, the latter gives them a little time to find survival.

To combat these atrocities, Humanitarian Forum Yemen and UN OCHA liaised together to bring forward an emergency response workshop. By gathering various organisations together within Yemen, the aim of the workshop was to unite groups and redirect their goals to reduce the suffering. The rising numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs, approximating 60,000) in the South, especially in the cities of Aden, Lahj & Abyaan, was a main focal point.  The workshop covered important issues including IDPs (Facilitated by WED and UNHCR), Health Care (facilitated by Al Nebras) and Protection (Facilitated by UNHCR).

Beside the unrest in the country, current issues revolve around the soaring food and fuel prices, as the ones who need it most are the ones being left behind; according to IRIN, the price of bread has risen by 50%. To top it off, there is a major concern that Yemen’s currency might collapse, pushing another 15% of Yemenis under the poverty line. Basic necessities are under-sourced, and the IDPs are suffering greatly.  Displaced communities and families are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with items such as food, water, shelter, protection and healthcare being vital for survival.

As a byproduct of the workshops carried out, an emergency intervention was suggested by the participants to tackle this growing issue.  As a result, The Humanitarian Forum launched the ‘Ramadan Appeal’ campaign, to alleviate the suffering of the affected civilians. Humanitarian Forum Yemen is coordinating the delivery of emergency packages to families in need, sustaining them for at least one month. The packages will contain vital food and non food items: sugar, rice, oil, flour, tea, water, infant milk, blankets, sheets, tents, cooking utensils, latrines and first aid kits

For a mere $85, a whole family’s suffering can be alleviated for over a month. Help us to ease the burden on the IDPs. Be their helping hand and donate here.
